News/Travel:I received confirmation last week that I will be joining a group of 40 other counselors at the end of April to tour Miami University of Ohio and the University of Dayton.  This trip will immediately precede my quick jaunt to Virginia for the annual Heick Symposium on the liberal arts hosted by Randolph College.I am also pre-registered for the Counsel of Independent Colleges of Virginia tour of Lynchburg-area colleges in October. Seniors:The NCAA has been doing a lot of features about athletes after their playing careers and recently featured one of my former college students.  If you worry that the bonds of your college days won't follow you after graduation, you'd better read about Jaime's experience. Also, before you head off to college this fall, please know that television gets college all wrong.Juniors:Worried about writing your college essay?  Here's a good brainstorming tip.  (I have more, but start with this one!)Underclassmen:Another feature on what it takes to be a working student - do you have the stamina?Parents:I still have received no January payments.  If you have not sent payment yet, your attention to this is appreciated.  If you have sent payment, it looks as though West Coast mail is taking approximately 14 days to arrive.  (Nope, that's not a typo!)This wonderful piece from The Washington Post examines the relationship between the STEM fields and the liberal arts.  It's worth a quick read. From the blog:If you (like me) live in the Midwest – or the Northeast, or the mid-Atlantic, or really just anywhere that’s currently buried under two feet (at least) of snow and waking up to temperatures in the negative degrees, you’re probably dreaming of summer.(All I want is to go outside and be able to breathe in without coughing – is that too much to ask?!)  Read More
