Chaos on College Campuses

The Leg Up Newsletter
Do you have plans to visit college campuses over spring break?
Those plans may be in danger of immediate cancellation.
In Brief:

Randi C. Heathman
Coronavirus (COVID-19) is all over the news at the moment - and for good reason.
For students and families planning to use their forthcoming spring break periods to visit college and university campuses and get a jump on the college search, however, the pandemic and its spread may very well thwart those plans and require that they be cancelled for the time being.
Since Monday (3/9), the number of U.S. colleges and universities closing their campuses and converting their academic learning to an online format has begun to climb substantially with new schools making this difficult decision every hour.
In addition, a host of collegiate sporting events - some as big as the NCAA basketball tournament and others as small as regional IHSA horse shows - are subject to change and total cancellation. Those planning to attend should monitor the situation carefully before making travel arrangements.

"Dear (Anxious) High School Seniors,
First of all, sorry, this is not the letter you were looking for, the one that tells you if you got into the college that, as you wrote on your application, “I’ve been waiting my whole life to attend.”
That letter may be a few more days or weeks. March is when colleges notify prospective students — thick letter, good; thin letter, not so good — which means a lot of nail-biting and panicked tweets (“When already, Michigan?!!”).
It also leaves some of you feeling like your lives hang in the balance.
They do not.
Nine years ago, I wrote a column urging everyone to calm down about which university would accept them. I received many notes of thanks from exhausted parents who had gotten so wrapped up in the process, they actually had dreams of being late for the SATs again."Read More
