NEWS & EVENTS:2013 Pin Oak Charity Horse Show Equestrian College Fair: The 2013 equestrian college fair hosted by the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show in Katy, Texas will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013. The college fair portion will be in the afternoon (2:00 - 5:00) and the coaches' panel will be from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the same location, which will be the Arena Club of the Great Southwest Equestrian Center. It's a great event and if you will be in the Houston area, it's worth checking out! (Better still, admission is free.)I will be there and am available for meetings on Saturday morning (September 21). This will allow me to visit Rice University on Friday afternoon when I arrive.2014 College Preparatory Invitational Horse Show: The 2014 CPI Horse Show will be held at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center on March 28-30, 2014. Applications for hunt seat riders went up August 15 and slots tend to fill quickly so don't wait to apply if you plan to attend. I will be present on "The ABCs of Riding in the NCEA" and "Your College Search Coursemap." (Seniors, these topics won't apply to you by spring, but tell your sophomore and junior friends!!)Dressage riders - Your CPI application will be available to fill out on September 15. (Students may enter both divisions if they choose.) Dressage tends to have more available slots than hunt seat and tests go no higher than First Level Test 3. STUDENTS:Keep those essay drafts coming!!! I know many of you are on tight deadlines with the start of school and that you also want your English teachers to have time to look at them before you send them. I'm turning drafts over in 48 hours at the moment and will continue to do so until we get them all ready to go. You're doing great - keep up the good work!If you're stuck on the brainstorming part of your essay, be sure to read my blog this week and next as I go over each and every Common Application prompt. PARENTS:Invoices will be sent September 3 for all outstanding balances on comprehensive and/or custom packages, as well as for hourly students who have outstanding balances from the month of August. Invoices will be sent via email to the primary parent email address. Your timely attention to this is appreciated. From the blog: The Common Application, an online college and university application form that allows students to fill out one single application to send to multiple schools that utilize a holistic application evaluation process (meaning they look beyond grades and test scores), was revamped for the 2013-2014 application cycle. The changes made to the form included the creation of five new essay prompts, each one of which gives students a different opportunity to highlight part of their character or tell colleges something that is important in their life that may not be readily apparent when admission officers read their transcripts and recommendations. But with five prompts to choose from and a word limit of 650, where do you begin? Moreover, what should you say that is both on topic and relevant to your life? Read Part One | Read Part Two
