Spring Into College Planning

Think spring!

As the weather starts to warm up (I hope!) and the flowers begin to bloom (soon!), it's a reminder that change is in the air.

For high school seniors, the past years have been challenging as they navigated virtual learning and pandemic-related obstacles; as they approach the end of their high school careers, however, a new chapter will begin. For parents, this may be a daunting time as they prepare to send their child to college - a big transition for both the student and the family.

For parents of sophomores and juniors, spring is an excellent time to start thinking about future plans and the college journey to come. High school teachers and counselors are already helping them select courses for next fall (pro tip: the more challenging the course, the more impressive to the colleges!) and encouraging a plan for taking the ACT or SAT. Students should also look for summer opportunities that match their interests (some options appear below) and if time and finances permit, campus visits are a great way to solidify a college list.Spring is that time of year we all want to get out and explore and for college-bound students, opportunities to examine future possibilities abound. Jump in with both feet - the water is quickly warming up!

College rankings are often a point of contention and confusion for students and educators alike. While they can provide some helpful information, it's important to remember that they are just one measure of a school's value and should not be the sole deciding factor in choosing where to attend. As more colleges and universities pull themselves out of contention in the annual rankings, the value of future rankings list may be significantly reduced.Colorado College provides one such recent example.
