News/Travel:For those who haven't heard, it was announced this week that Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg, Virginia will close at the end of August. It was a shock to many in the higher education and equestrian communities - in particular as Sweet Briar was known to have a comfortable and substantial endowment for a school of its size. Much discussion and speculation has ensued, but the best assessment I've read regarding the situation can be found here.As you can imagine, the announcement has also frightened a host of other small liberal arts colleges regarding their own futures and is causing students and parents to wonder if they have cause for concern regarding their own favorite institutions. The short answer right now is that no one knows exactly what the fallout will be from this and what schools might be next. I'm keeping in close contact with my informed friends who still work in college admissions so that I can continue to provide you with updated information and continue to help you navigate the tricky college search waters.(Interesting that my April symposium will be held in Lynchburg - I have a sneaking suspicion that we will now have a slightly different discussion than the one that was originally planned...) Seniors:As you plan ahead for your transition to college, talk with your parents and even with your friends about the social scene. Substance use happens on every campus and you'll want to be prepared for how you will address it in your own life.Juniors:Undecided on a major at this point? Here are the fields where they're hiring the most.Underclassmen:Can you afford college? Use a net price calculator to find out!Parents:February invoices have been sent. If you expected to receive one and didn't, please check your spam folder or contact me.Does it matter where your student ultimately enrolls? Not so much. From the blog:I’m one of those people that strangers share things with. I don’t know what it is about me, but inevitably I find myself in line at the grocery store or seated on an airplane next to a person who looks me up and down and decides to strike up a conversation. And so all of a sudden I learn their life story even though I haven’t solicited it.(I’m serious, readers – you should travel with me one time and witness this phenomenon. It’s crazy!) Read More
