The College RoadshowThe majority of college experts say the best way to learn about colleges you’re interested in is through visits to campus. Tours afford you the opportunity to set foot in the buildings where you might one day attend class and meet students, faculty, and staff you’ll encounter as an enrolled student. Visits also allow you to demonstrate strong interest in a particular school – something that can benefit you later when your application is reviewed.But what if you can’t make it to campus in person?If you’re unable to tour campuses you’re interested in, find out from your school counselor if representatives from those schools will visit your area, either as participants in regional college fair event or as a visitor to your high school. As part of traditional admission counselor outreach, the majority of colleges and universities send their personnel on the road for eight to twelve weeks during the fall – and in many cases, the person you meet on the road may be the one responsible for reading your application!Even if you were fortunate enough to visit several of the colleges you’re interested in, meeting with representatives when they’re in your area still offers several advantages to you in the admission process:

You can ask follow up questions. Perhaps additional questions have come to mind regarding a program or something you saw on campus during a tour. Perhaps you want to know something specific about the nursing program or a coaching change on the soccer team. Either way, the school representative has answers for you.
You can further demonstrate your interest in the school. Schools like to spend their time recruiting students who have genuine interest in their programs so the best way to get attention from your top choices is to show them attention in return. Chatting with the representative at the high school visit is a good (and easy!) way to do so.
In some cases, the representative can give an early indication to the likelihood of your being admitted. For some larger public universities, the representative can sit down with your transcript and test scores and provide you with a sense of where you would fit in their applicant pool before you even submit your paperwork. This insight can help improve your chances of admission if you use the information to strengthen your spring semester schedule or re-take a test.
