The Cycle Repeats

In my youthful days as a college admission counselor, fall was always referred to as travel season by both my colleagues and myself. Labor Day was that line of demarcation between the easy, office-bound days of summer and the hours (upon hours) spent on the road traveling between high schools, college fairs, and a myriad of hotels that eventually started to look alike.(Spoiler alert: They looked alike because my travel territory often had me staying at the same hotels from week to week. One time I walked into the lobby and was greeted at the desk with, "Welcome back, Miss Heathman. This week we have you on the third floor.")Ah, road life! Now the fall season looks a lot like more time spent in my office reading through essay drafts and wading through the intricacies of the Common Application with my seniors, all while beginning the process of college list building with the juniors, and wishing everyone the best of luck with their rides at Indoors or the start of IEA season or USDF Regionals or wherever they're headed. And eventually applications will be in and we'll move on to financial aid analysis, students will hear back from schools, visits and re-visits will happen, and the cycle will move forward until we're all back here again at the same time next year.I love this cycle and the work I get to do with students at such an important and transitional time in their lives. (And I also love that, these days, my commute is that much shorter.)
