The majority of my students are, of course, determined to join an intercollegiate equestrian team after high school. Likewise, many have aspirations toward a varsity equestrian experience, whether as part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) or the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA), which breeds a whole new set of challenges and considerations for students to bear in mind as they transition from their high school riding programs into a new format and a new level of play.

One particular challenge for many of these varsity hopefuls comes not during the search and evaluation process, but instead arrives after they’ve been selected for the team and must embrace the reality of what being a student-athlete at the varsity level really means.
